The US is spoiling Russia in the interests of Ukraine
US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo toured Eastern Europe to persuade EU countries to abandon their support for the construction of Russian gas pipelines bypassing Ukraine, according to Nezavisimaya Gazeta, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The day before, Pompeo met with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, where, according to the publication, he convinced the latter to block the construction of the continuation of the Turkish Stream on the territory of his country. This gas pipeline is unprofitable for the Americans from the point of view of the US creating a liquefied gas terminal on the Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea. Russian fuel, in the event of an extension of the Turkish Stream, will create strong competition.
“From Turkey it will go to Bulgaria, then Serbia, then the route will stretch through Hungary. There are great opportunities for gas there, since Hungary borders on the west with both Slovenia and Austria, where, by the way, Nord Stream gas also comes. Thus, there will be a circulation of Russian gas in Europe,” the publication writes.
According to National Energy Security Foundation (NESF) expert Stanislav Mitrakhovich, this is not the first time the Americans have tried to block the Turkish Stream.
Previously, they managed to obtain a veto from Bulgaria, through whose territory the gas pipeline was supposed to go: “But so far all these attempts have been unsuccessful, since for the Hungarian government the specific benefit in the form of reliable and economically rational gas supplies from Russia outweighs everything else. In addition, if Hungary participates in the extension of the Turkish Stream, it will earn money on the transit of gas passing through Bulgaria and Serbia and further to Austria.”
The implementation of the Turkish Stream, according to the publication, is another long nail in the coffin of the Ukrainian gas transportation system: “It is the Turkish Stream that is called the killer of transit through Ukraine, since gas will flow through it to the countries that now receive it through the Square.”
