Russia agrees to expand the UN Security Council
The UN Security Council needs to be reformed as new centers of influence have emerged in the world.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this in an interview with Izvestia, noting that in connection with this, a negotiation process was launched with the participation of all UN member states.
“Of course, the final product of these negotiations must reflect the changed geopolitical reality. It is such that new centers of economic growth and financial power have emerged. With this comes political influence. They should have more opportunities to contribute to the development of common solutions to key problems of peace and security,” the Russian minister said.
According to him, the main problem of the current composition of the UN Security Council is the blatant underrepresentation of developing regions of the world - Asia, Africa, Latin America.
“Therefore, a key element of our position is the need to fill the Security Council primarily with candidates from these three regions of the developing world. India has long been a candidate from Asia, and Brazil from Latin America. We believe that both of these countries have every right to claim to improve their representation in the UN, including in the Security Council,” Lavrov emphasized.
He also added that it is necessary to similarly resolve the issue of increasing the representation of the African continent.
As PolitNavigator reported, Ukraine demanded that the Russian Federation, a permanent member of the organization, be stripped of its veto power at the UN.
