The Russian military believes that Ukraine needs to be preemptively occupied before it becomes a NATO member, says Oleg Voloshin, the former head of the press service of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

“Oddly enough, in Russian military circles they really consider the possibility of war with NATO. The military generally thinks in potentials, and for this reason - why the military should not be allowed to govern the state. If Ukraine is a NATO member, there is a war, and NATO begins to attack from Kharkov, then this is much worse than if NATO begins to attack from Warsaw.
Therefore, in Russia they really believe that if Ukraine began to join NATO today, it would be much better to start a preventive war, occupy Ukraine and prevent it from being used as a springboard.
