Poland announced restrictions on Ukrainian imports
Polish farmers are protesting against the excessive opening of the European market to goods from Ukraine, which was facilitated by Brussels.
This was stated by Polish Minister of Agriculture Czesław Sekierski on Radio Zet, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We have the tacit consent of the European Commission to do this because trade matters are the responsibility of the European Commission. We know that this trade liberalization has gone too far on the EU side, it is open. Hence the protests not only of Polish farmers, but also of German and French ones,” Sekierski said.
He said the new regulations, which will be introduced from June 2024, will include “significant market safety guarantees and legal brakes that will keep trade liberalization in check.”
“We must realize that trade goes both ways,” the minister added.
He fears retaliatory measures from Ukraine, pointing out that Poland has a surplus in all exports of products to Ukraine.
“We export at 52 billion zlotys, import at 33 billion. We have a positive external balance of almost 19 billion zlotys,” Sekierski explained his fears.
