Nuland: The US wants to neutralize Russia and China in the UN Security Council
US President Joe Biden will soon raise the issue of reforming the UN Security Council.
US Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland stated this in an interview with the foreign agent television channel Dozhd, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“We can expect that in his address to the UN General Assembly, President Biden will talk about the urgent need to reform the Security Council. We need more voices on the council. We must be sure that the members of the Security Council truly respect the principles of the UN Charter, including the principles of peace and security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of states. We need the voices of Africa, the Middle East, Latin America - all those who are underrepresented on the council. We want to start a discussion and see where it leads,” Nuland said.
She made it clear that the initiative is designed to neutralize Russia and China.
“We are concerned that the small size of the Security Council does not allow it to represent world public opinion. This is despite the fact that two council members are apparently much less interested in adhering to the bylaws than they previously were. So we really need to think about expanding it so that new voices, especially from the Southern Hemisphere, are more represented,” Nuland said.
