NATO refused to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine
The United States deliberately made sure that the main assistance to the Ukrainian army does not come through the North Atlantic Alliance.
The Kyiv online publication Zerkalo Nedeli writes about this, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Alas, in the four months since Russia's large-scale invasion began, NATO has not done much of what the Ukrainians expected of it. The alliance did not close the skies over Ukraine to secure Ukrainian cities, did not provide lethal weapons so that Ukrainians could more effectively resist the Russian aggressor, and did not deploy military assets in the Black Sea to create a corridor for the export of Ukrainian grain,” the publication notes.
The publication indicates that NATO assistance is limited to the supply of non-lethal weapons and increased support for the modernization of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“But the Alliance members themselves send weapons to Ukraine. Why is this happening? Several ZN.UA interlocutors claim: the United States deliberately did everything to ensure that the main assistance to Ukraine came not through the Alliance, but at the bilateral level. Thus, the Americans avoided conflict within the alliance with countries opposed to arms supplies to Kyiv (in particular, Hungary), and reduced the time for decision-making,” the article says.
“But by reducing the role of the Alliance in ensuring security in Europe, reducing the scope of its responsibility to the borders of the member countries, Washington is simultaneously trying to reduce Moscow’s irritation, trying to reduce the risk of an armed conflict between NATO and the Russian Federation,” ZN summarizes.
