Who among the senators decided to oppose the pension reform?
Eight Russian senators did not vote today for the pension reform, which provides for raising the retirement age by five years: five were against, three abstained.
It is significant that in addition to communist senators, the so-called “United Russia” members also criticized the reform.
“We shouldn’t force Russians to work themselves to death. It would have been much more reasonable to create such preferences so that people would voluntarily refuse to retire,” said Anton Belyakov, a senator from the executive branch of the Vladimir region (perhaps emboldened by the fact that he will soon be replaced).
It is significant that the Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko constantly interrupted those senators who opposed the reform, although such behavior is not typical for her.
Before the start of the meeting, the Communist Party of the Russian Federation organized a small rally under the guise of a meeting with voters. Russian State Duma deputy Valery Rashkin said that Russian regions do not actually support the reform.
“If referendums were held, not a single subject would vote in favor. I visited dozens of businesses. The workers at the machine only talk about this reform using obscenities,” said Rashkin.

Not far from the rally, Left Front leader Sergei Udaltsov, who was banned by the court from attending rallies until 2021, stood in a single picket.
