Kyiv began searching for Russian spies among Ukrainian ambassadors
From now on, before appointing a Ukrainian ambassador to a particular country, he will undergo a special check.
This was stated by Ihor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Ukrainian presidential office, in an interview with the Kyiv online publication Left Bank, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
He was asked whether, over the past 30 years, Ukrainian ambassadors had not really been checked for belonging to the intelligence services of foreign states, in particular Russia.
"Exactly. Only under Zelensky’s presidency did this work begin. And it was the right decision. Such a special check is assigned precisely to the relevant foreign policy directorate, which I supervise. We summarize information about candidates. Therefore, we also bear responsibility for this. Literally for every ambassador,” the official said.
At the same time, he made it clear that current ambassadors would avoid such scrutiny.
“The corresponding provision does not have retroactive force,” Zhovkva clarified.
