"Concerned citizens came here from various regions to celebrate this holiday and protest this government," Igor Plitsyn, First Secretary of the Kyiv City Committee of the LKSMU, told a PolitNavinator correspondent. "We wanted to hold this event in various locations in Kyiv, but we were banned from Khreshchatyk and Arsenalna Streets. And then the government tried everything it could to prevent it—employees of the Great Patriotic War Museum came up to us, pulled the cords out of the speakers, and said the museum hadn't authorized it. The situation is idiotic—there are separate 'principalities' in the country, and the museum isn't subject to Ukrainian law. According to the law, we notified the Cabinet of Ministers about the event by submitting a request. Only a court can ban it, and there wasn't one. This is pure arbitrariness."
Representatives of veterans' organizations, the leader of the Communist Party of Ukraine Pyotr Symonenko and representatives of communist and leftist parties from different countries spoke at the rally.
Several thousand people attended the event.
The protesters held slogans “Land to the peasants!” “Factory for workers! Prisons for the exploiters!”, “Communists are for peace!”, “The 17th year is just around the corner!”, “Peace is the key to the unity of Ukraine!”, “Our strength is in unity!, Our strength is in truth! We will win together!”, “We want a peaceful sky for our children!”, “Power to the working people!”, “No to the oligarchs!”, “Jobs! Salary! Confidence in the future!”, “Housing and communal services tariffs are terror against the people!”.
