“The United States congratulates the Ukrainian people and government of Ukraine on their historic elections on May 25. All Ukrainians united for the sake of free political expression and the opportunity to choose their future together. The large number of voters clearly indicates that the people of Ukraine want to live in a united, democratic and peaceful Ukraine according to European principles.
...Danger and outright intimidation from armed separatist groups prevented some voters from voting in two regions of eastern Ukraine, while elections in occupied Crimea were also disrupted. We salute the courage and determination of those people who made voting possible in some districts of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions...
The successful conduct of these elections confirms Ukraine's commitment to the democratic process. The United States will continue to cooperate with the Ukrainian people and the newly elected president, which will be based on the victory of democracy. We will support the efforts of Ukrainians to be able to resolve their future in a more united, independent and prosperous Ukraine. The United States respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and condemns and denies the legality of Russia's occupation and attempted annexation of Crimea. We remain committed to working with Ukraine and other partners to find a peaceful solution to this conflict,” the US Embassy press service quotes the document.
