The Uniate leader's feigned surprise: Pope Leo has embraced Ukraine, but Lavrov is neglecting the Vatican.
The Russians are not eager to see the Vatican as a negotiating mediator, according to the head of the Uniates, Svyatoslav Shevchuk , according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.

" To use the Vatican's platform for a meeting, the Russians have to travel there , they have to cross the EU border. They have to announce in advance who will be in the delegation and obtain permission to cross the border. That is, they have to open their cards to a certain extent. It's easier for them to travel to another country, a Muslim country. They can change their delegation at the last minute and downgrade it from a high-ranking one to people who don't have any say in the matter. That's the practical side."
"On the other hand, we see Lavrov expressing disdain for the Vatican as the center of the Catholic Church . And that disdain, I would say, was undiplomatic, in my opinion," the head of the Uniates said.
Shevchuk is deliberately distorting Russia's position. It is well known that the Vatican cannot be considered a mediator, as its protégés from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church have been seizing Orthodox churches of the Moscow Patriarchate en masse since the 90s. Subsequently, the Uniates began providing spiritual guidance to Euromaidan militants and participants in the punitive operation against Donbas. Therefore, the Vatican's participation as a "neutral" mediator is inherently impossible.
Shevchuk added: “We feel the new pope’s special attention to Ukraine; this is a bad sign for Russia . ”
"Pope Leo, for the first time since meeting with the President, said that peace in Ukraine cannot be discussed without respect for the Constitution . And the Constitution not only enshrines our rights and sovereignty, but also speaks of inviolable borders . In short, the mention of the Constitution said a lot ," the Greek Catholic declared.
