“It will only grow and get worse,” – the Russian Foreign Ministry does not promise anything good to compatriots in Ukraine
In recent years, the campaign of discrimination, harassment, and unfounded politicized accusations in courts against Russian compatriots and citizens abroad, especially in Ukraine, has significantly intensified.
Vladimir Andreev, Deputy Director of the Department for New Challenges and Threats at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced this during a press conference in Moscow, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Unfortunately, in recent years the number of cases of violation of the rights of Russian citizens and compatriots abroad has been growing in number; these are politically motivated violations by the authorities of the relevant states.
Facts of detention of Russian citizens abroad, violations of rights in places of detention. Also, obstruction of the activities of Russian journalists, in particular in relation to the situation in Ukraine, the situation with persecution by the Ukrainian authorities, and aggression on the part of Ukrainian nationalists against civil activists who advocate maintaining ties with Russia, the Russian language and literature,” Andreev noted.
In turn, the Russian Foreign Ministry Commissioner for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, Grigory Lukyantsev, stated the need to protect Russian citizens abroad at the state level.
"We would be happy if there was no need for human rights work abroad, but unfortunately, it will only escalate and worsen. Because the campaign of discrimination, harassment , and unfounded, politicized accusations against Russian compatriots and Russian citizens in the courts will continue."
This needs to be countered, naturally, at the state level - this is the task of government bodies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. But there are tasks that can only be solved by the intervention of a unique human rights mechanism – the Fund for the Support and Protection of the Rights of Compatriots Living Abroad, which will act with resources and courage,” the official assured.
