The American magazine Newsweek published an article in the “Opinions” section, the authors of which recommend that the new president of the country withdraw the United States from the UN humanitarian operation in Syria, because the UN is cooperating with Bashar al-Assad. Analysts advise Biden to launch an exclusively American operation in Syria, bypassing any United Nations institutions.

The magazine article pays a lot of attention to Russia's role in the Syrian crisis and its contribution to the fact that this Middle Eastern country still has legitimate power. In fact, it is the role of Moscow that concerns the authors of the material most of all - it seems that it was precisely this that became the reason for all these arguments. One of the authors, Robert Ford, was the US Ambassador to Damascus from 2011 to 2014, so this is not just an opinion, but a commentary from a specialist who sees certain things in his own frame of reference.

“Russia will support Assad’s re-election to a new term as part of a sham election tentatively scheduled for the spring, then Moscow will seek a broader carte blanche for Assad to lead all UN relief operations in Syria,” analysts write in a short but expressive review.

Therefore, they conclude that the country's humanitarian crisis needs to be politicized, and the new administration needs to start preparing for such politicization now.

“Newsweek is a fairly authoritative magazine, and since such an opinion appeared on its pages, it means that the situation in Syria is really of concern to part of the American elite. And since they emphasize the Russian role, this means that Moscow did everything right when it decided to support the Assad government. Russian forces coped with this task - be it the VKS in the sky or the Wagner PMC on the ground,” political scientist Vladimir Karasev responded to the publication.

The expert sees in the published proposal an opportunity for Russia to strengthen its position in the international community.

“Now, thanks to this opinion, we can assume what the States will do at the next stage. Unnecessarily taking over Syrian problems and ignoring the UN will certainly not please some serious countries. And we will be able to build allied relations with these countries on Syrian issues, if we need it,” Karasev believes.

According to the expert, this line of thinking is generally characteristic of the American administration.

“Washington generally likes to politicize any crisis. Some people don’t understand when someone is starving or is in a shelled area, but if democracy is infringed somewhere, then this immediately falls into the American standard. Well, it’s clear that they themselves prefer to decide what such a standard is applied to,” the political scientist concluded.
