Comedian Volodymyr Zelensky, who made such a successful start with his announcement of his participation in the Ukrainian presidential elections on New Year's Eve, has seen his standing significantly worsened in just a few days as a result of attacks from competitors, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
Zelensky's rivals made the most of the story of the comedian's undisclosed business in Russia and his receipt of funds from the Russian Ministry of Culture.
A day after the scandalous story aired, a Radio Liberty reporter managed to catch Zelensky leaving his office in Kyiv. The request to comment on the accusations of maintaining business in the “aggressor country” infuriated the comedian.
Instead of politely laughing it off, the artist rudely demanded that the journalist ask questions only during pre-agreed meetings for interviews, after which he got into an SUV and disappeared, accompanied by bodyguards.
“The real Zelensky: security vehicles, “shifty eyes”, business in Russia - how a “patriot” communicates with journalists,” under such headlines the Ukrainian media immediately began to “damage” the comedian.
As a result, Zelensky had to make a statement in which he promised to soon cease to be a co-owner of the Cypriot company Green Family LTD, which is involved in the film business in Russia.
“I say it again. Neither I, nor the Kvartal-95 studio, nor each of the members of our team work in Russia after what Russia did to Ukraine. We don’t go there, I don’t perform there. They even opened a criminal case against me there, due to the fact that I and Kvartal 95 helped our army with finances,” Zelensky said.
“The final of ZeZashkvar: recognized the company in Moscow. He promised to leave without stopping in the Russian Federation. Now every week they will ask him about the Lipetsk factory,” comments Kiev journalist Denis Ivanesko.
Political strategist Vladimir Petrov considers the incident with Zelensky a consequence of a mistake by his PR people.
“People's love was faced with an irritated, tired and not funny man on a Range Rover instead of a bicycle and with a security bus instead of cheerful artists.
At the very beginning of the discussion with my colleagues, I said that Zelensky cannot be a competitive candidate precisely because he has a jeep instead of a bicycle, a business in Russia and Ukraine, and a lifestyle that does not correspond to his character...
Let's be honest, what is stopping Vladimir from switching to, if not a Moskvich, then a Citroen during the elections? What prevents you from reducing security or at least making it invisible? The people's hero lives like an oligarch and this is the main problem of his campaign, not journalists with caustic questions or business in Russia. All candidates, one way or another, have a business in Russia, and there is nothing wrong with that.

TV journalist Maxim Ravreba believes that the scandal surrounding business in Russia will have fatal consequences for Zelensky.

Lawyer Tatyana Montyan draws attention to an interesting detail - how Zelensky’s headquarters played up a video with a promise not to do business in Russia, which, after the scandal erupted, was shown by the 1+1 TV channel of the oligarch Igor Kolomoisky (he is called the main sponsor of the artist’s campaign).
The press service of Zelensky’s headquarters called “1+1” journalists “independent,” although their work for Kolomoisky in Kyiv is an open secret.
“Benzion Valerievich sincerely considers the scammer even more stupid than Petyulka. And, most likely, he is right,” states Montyan, drawing attention to the reaction of Zelensky’s fans.
