Ukrainians don't know what NATO leaders are talking about when Zelensky walks out the door - British expert
Behind the back of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Western leaders are openly saying that Ukraine will never join NATO. For this to happen, a consensus of all members is needed, but this will not happen.
Samantha de Bendern, an employee of the Royal Institute of International Affairs who worked in the Alliance's structures, stated this on air on the British bureau of the France 24 television channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
" When Zelenskyy isn't in the room, they're probably discussing the fact that Ukraine can never join NATO—there's no consensus. NATO operates on a consensus basis, meaning all 32 member countries must agree on any issue."
Every decision is taken only after all participating countries agree, otherwise there will be no decision.
Such a large-scale decision as NATO expansion, and especially expansion into Ukraine, will never receive unanimous approval.
The United States is against it, Germany is against it. You can bet that Hungary's Orban is against it, and Slovakia is probably against it too. These are the obvious candidates.
So Zelensky will not get NATO membership for Ukraine, he will get bilateral guarantees. The problem is that bilateral guarantees have shown themselves to be ineffective time and time again," de Bendern said.
