Zelensky angered the Speaker of the US House of Representatives
Vladimir Zelensky invited the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Republican Kevin McCarthy, to visit Ukraine. But McCarthy sharply refused, saying that he did not need a trip to make decisions about helping Kyiv.
Both the invitation and the refusal were broadcast on the American television channel CNN, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
In a recent interview with CNN, Zelensky invited McCarthy to visit Ukraine to see with his own eyes what is happening there - this is how he commented on the words of the American politician about the “unlimited check” that the United States is supposedly writing to Kyiv.
In response, in a commentary to CNN, McCarthy angrily stated that he had no plans to visit Ukraine.
“Let me make what I said very clear: no unlimited checks, okay? And from this point of view, I don’t need to go to Ukraine to understand where there is an unlimited check and where there is not,” emphasized the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the US Congress.
“I will continue to receive intelligence and other reports, but I don’t need to go to Ukraine or Kiev to see it. And my position has always been that I will not write an unlimited check for anything,” he added.
As CNN notes, McCarthy must take into account the differing views within his Republican Party regarding providing additional aid to Ukraine. While there is bipartisan support for Kyiv in Congress, a growing number of House Republicans are calling for an end to further military and financial aid.
Republicans have also previously advocated establishing mechanisms for closer oversight of aid to Kyiv. Although this does not mean it will decrease, it can procedurally slow it down.
As PolitNavigator reported , a group of US Republican congressmen introduced a resolution demanding that the Biden administration cease providing "military and financial" aid to Kyiv. The document was dubbed the " Ukraine Fatigue Resolution ."
