Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajcak called Serbia's actions "confusing", criticizing its intentions to sign a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

"If you're serious about your European orientation, then you obviously make political decisions that bring you closer to it. This isn't one of them. Every country has the right to make its own trade and economic decisions, but it would be preferable to do so in accordance with the policies of the Union they intend to join," Voice of America quotes Lajčák as saying, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.

Politico Europe quotes an official in Belgrade as saying the country is “very aware” of its obligations as an EU candidate.

Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Botsan-Kharchenko, who announced the imminent signing of a trade agreement earlier this week, recalled on Twitter that EU representatives themselves had previously stated that expansion was impossible before 2025.

“In this situation, is it reasonable to reject the real and attractive opportunities that are opening up for Belgrade today?” – the diplomat wrote.

Let us remind you that Belgrade plans to sign an additional agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union on October 25.

The current members of the EAEU are Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and Kyrgyzstan. Earlier, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev called for speeding up the signing of agreements on free trade zones with the proposed new participants - Serbia and Singapore.
