To lobby Kyiv's interests in the United States, it is necessary to involve military personnel undergoing medical treatment in America , since only they can win arguments with Republicans who accuse Ukraine of corruption and the Ukrainian Armed Forces of being unable to fight with American weapons.
This was stated on the Majlis television channel ATR by Mykola Melnyk , a former company commander of the 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who lost his leg in the "counteroffensive" and is currently undergoing treatment in the United States, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
" A certain group of Republicans is intolerant of Ukraine; they constantly bring up the issue of corruption, oligarchy, and the Ukrainian soldiers' inability to use weapons. But wherever I go, I try to explain to them that they, too, have corruption, they, too, have oligarchs, one of whom is running for president again, and we know how to use weapons, but let's talk about the quality of the weapons you provide."
And the big question is why I should do this without any support from our government institutions.
We have an embassy and a Ministry of Foreign Affairs , but I don’t see that the Ukrainians who are here for treatment, and there are quite a few of us, are involved in advocacy processes.
"This is done by more professional people, but they are little regarded by the American establishment. Americans appreciate the military—people who fought for this country. They dislike people who are not currently in their own country , but for unknown reasons are in Washington, trying to lobby for something. This is a systemic problem," Melnik said.
He added that those who arrived after the start of the SVO mostly sit “and do not show any light”; the diaspora of the second and fourth waves is lobbying for the interests of Ukraine.
" But it's not radical. For example, no one here will ever reach the level we reached with the Crimean Tatars back in 2016, when they threw pig heads at the Russian embassy. For them, that's just rabid radicalism," the Ukrainian Armed Forces officer said.
