This opinion was expressed in a commentary to Rossiyskaya Gazeta by ex-member of the European Parliament, former adviser to the President of France, professor of political science Ivan Blot, who noted that the longer he watches the steps of Vladimir Putin, the greater the similarity he sees between him and General Charles de Gaulle.

According to Blo, the Russian president's message to the Federal Assembly was another confirmation of this.

"In international affairs, Charles de Gaulle consistently advocated a sovereign course. To ensure France's independence from the United States, he relied on the strategic nuclear forces he created. Bending was not in the general's nature. And Vladimir Putin, by clearly demonstrating a range of cutting-edge weapons systems , demonstrated that Russia would not allow its security to be jeopardized," the political scientist said.

He recalled that Moscow has repeatedly called on the United States to return to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, which the Americans withdrew unilaterally in 2002.

“And now, when Moscow has made it clear that it has the most modern strategic means capable of canceling out the plans of the United States, Vladimir Putin overseas, and even in some European capitals, is accused of “aggressive intentions,” as, by the way, General de Gaulle once was. I remember well Washington's hostility towards the general due to the fact that he was always independent and uncontrollable. They called him “dangerous,” “intractable,” and even, you won’t believe it, “a communist,” which de Gaulle, a man of conservative views, of course, never was,” the professor recalled.

The expert believes that Vladimir Putin now, like de Gaulle in his time, does not threaten anyone, and his message is a serious warning, backed up by an impressive arsenal, which, according to Blau, “has become a sobering, cold shower for many of Russia’s opponents in the West "

The publication's interlocutor also emphasized that the authority of the Russian president in many countries has been growing in recent years.

“You know, I give lectures on geopolitics and relations with Russia at three universities. And here’s what I noticed: many young French people assess Vladimir Putin’s activities very positively. And this despite clearly politicized attempts in some of our media to present Russia and its president in a negative light. I am sure that something similar is happening in other European countries,” said Blo.
