“Relatives and friends, students, ATO veterans, and public activists came to honor the memory of the hero. Those present laid flowers at the memorial plaque. In honor of Alexey Zaika, one of the streets in the Shevchenkovsky district of Zaporozhye was renamed, a memorial plaque was installed at school No. 95, where he studied, to the courageous defender of Ukraine,” the publication says.

The publication also provides details of the militant’s death.
“In July 2014, soldiers of the second platoon of the sixth company of the 93rd brigade set up a checkpoint between the villages of Pervaya Novoselovka and Umanskoye, Yasinovatsky district, actually behind enemy lines. On the morning of July 3, 2014, militants attacked the fortifications. Alexey Zaika was the first to open fire on the enemy tank. This allowed fellow soldiers to regroup and save many lives. But the forces were unequal - seven Ukrainian heroes died in the battle. Thanks to our artillerymen and the approach of reinforcements, the terrorist attack was repulsed, and Karlovka was soon liberated. Thanks to the courage of the defenders of the 10th checkpoint, the invaders did not have time to blow up the dam of the Karlovsky reservoir, from which water is supplied to the Pokrovsky and Dobropolsky districts of the Donetsk region,” the publication writes.
The mother of the deceased Zaporozhye soldier told local media that “he was an angel.”
