There is a disaster in the universities of Western Ukraine: The Poles are sweeping out all talented students
Due to lack of funding, there is a catastrophic outflow of personnel from Ukrainian scientific institutions. Anatoly Shirokov, chairman of the trade union of workers of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, announced this at a press conference in Kyiv.

“During the years of Ukraine’s independence, the number of employees in scientific institutions has decreased by more than three times. If, according to UNESCO data, the number of people in science around the world has increased by 25% over the past 20 years, then over the past two years the reduction has been more than 16%. During this year, the reduction of NASU left 4685 people, and taking into account 2015 – 6385,” he said.
“The universities in Western Ukraine are a total disaster. The Poles are sweeping away all talented students, master's and postgraduate programs. They give scholarships, grants – everything,” Shirokov added.
Because of this, in Western Ukraine they are forced to invite even those who do not know English to graduate school, he noted.
“There is a process of personnel extinction in science in Ukraine. Young people are no longer coming, older people are leaving for another world. We're about to have a disaster. When the necessary money appears, there will simply be no one to work in science,” says Anatoly Shirokov.
