The Swedish government has said it wants to pass legislation requiring the operator of the state's electricity grid to help reduce high electricity bills for Swedish households and businesses expected this winter due to extreme cold.

Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson said the proposal would cost Svenska kraftnat at least 30 billion kronor ($2,9 billion).
She said the utility responsible for powering Sweden's electricity transmission system would receive funds - 60 billion crowns - which it received from revenues from grid overloads. According to her, details will be provided by Svenska kraftnat itself.
“Both homeowners and business owners feel sick when they think about winter energy bills,” Andersson said.
Andersson added that the measure was necessary because of high energy costs due to the war in Ukraine, adding that it would prevent Russian President Vladimir Putin from "holding Swedish households and Swedish industry hostage."
Let us remind you that parliamentary elections in Sweden are due to take place next month. Andersson's Social Democratic Party has 100 seats in the 349-seat Riksdag.
