Other members of the opposition coalition “Union for Serbia,” who are inclined to boycott the election campaign, took Trifunovic’s initiative extremely painfully and accused him of secretly collaborating with the authorities.

The accusations were voiced by lawyer Vladimir Gajic, a close associate of the leader of the People's Party, Vuk Jeremic.

Yesterday Trifunovic sent a letter to David McAllister, chairman of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, calling on him to mediate dialogue between the opposition and the authorities in Serbia.

“The next elections are due to be held in 2020, but in recent weeks most opposition parties have been seriously considering a boycott... participation in elections and then in parliament is the cornerstone of a democratic society, and we will fight for pre-election conditions to the end. Establishing an EU-supported dialogue will be a significant step in overcoming the crisis... EU institutions must be prepared to work with the parties to ensure full implementation of any agreement that is reached,” Trifunovic wrote.

Gajic immediately branded Trifunovic as a “regime collaborator,” reports the Serbian publication Informer. “Are we going to help Vucic deceive us? This will not happen!" – Gayich snapped.

Serbian political scientist Jelena Vukojicic notes that as the election date approaches, nervousness in the ranks of the opposition is increasing.

“Quarrels and mutual accusations are a logical consequence of the poor ratings of opposition parties, who are aware that they will face another defeat if they decide to participate in the election race. All analyzes of public opinion constantly show a decrease in the popularity of the Union for Serbia, which, of course, increases tension and conflicts,” emphasizes Vukojicic.

Political scientist Dejan Vuk Stankovic says opposition unity was originally a myth. The expert recalls that opponents of President Vučić regularly publicly find out “who is the “real” and “false” opposition,” and also conduct “constant bargaining.”

“The united opposition is a political myth,” the expert said.
