In honor of the black date, a wreath-laying ceremony took place in Brodsky Field and a memorial service was served.

“On that day, a large number of well-armed Croatian soldiers with heavy weapons crossed from Slavonski Brod (in Croatia - ed.) across the bridge (over the border Sava River) to Brod,” said Zoran Vidić, head of the local veterans’ organization. “The attacks on the Serbian population began immediately, on the Broad-Derventa highway, on Stadion Street, when the Croatian-Muslim armed forces (subordinate to Sarajevo - ed.) together with the 108th Brigade of the Croatian National Guard captured the city center.”

According to Vidic, due to the coronavirus epidemic this year, the anniversary of the aggression was celebrated more modestly than before, without large crowds of people. He also recalled that it was on March 3, 1992, in the then Bosanski Brod (later renamed Brod) that a meeting took place between representatives of three nations - Serbs, Croats and Muslim Bosniaks, political leaders of parties who had advisers in the local Assembly.

The purpose of the meeting was to relieve tensions caused by the referendum on independence of BiH, which was boycotted by the Serbian community. The then Chairman of the Executive Council of the Municipal Assembly of Bosanski Brod, Serbian Mihajlo Srijemac, proposed a solution to calm the tense situation. However, upon returning home, he was shot at and wounded by militants from local Bosniak-Croat units.

The Croatian army enters the city.

After which, units of the Croatian regular army that captured the city, together with local separatists, unleashed terror against the local Serbian population. In particular, on March 25, 1992, the local families Martić and Dujanić were killed, and on March 26, nine Serb civilians were killed in Siekovce, and in the subsequent days of the occupation, another 37 Serb residents. The youngest victim was 17, the oldest was 72 years old.

Liberation.

The occupation of Brod and the surrounding area by the Croatian army continued until October 7, 1992, when this territory, as a result of stubborn fighting, was liberated by the army of the Republika Srpska under the command of General Slavko Lisica.
