Russia will force Turkey to reckon with the front line in Idlib, which was formed as a result of the Syrian army’s offensive on militant positions.
Military expert, editor-in-chief of the National Defense magazine Igor Korotchenko stated this in a commentary to PolitNavigator, commenting on the meeting of the Russian and Turkish presidents scheduled for March 5th.
“The situation in Idlib is complex - the line of hostilities is as it is, this status quo will be submitted for negotiations, there will be no rollbacks, no surrender of territories. Türkiye will either agree with the new reality, or let it think about how to proceed.
In any case, I think that our negotiating position will consist solely in the fact that the battle line in the form in which it has been preserved, those areas of Idlib that have come under the control of the Syrian army, is already a given with which Ankara will be forced be considered. We will force her to reckon with this,” Korotchenko said.
According to the expert, if Turkey escalates further and tries to block shipping canals from the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea, this will lead to the collapse of its economy.
“It would be an unfriendly gesture. I would like Erdogan to think first of all about the economic preferences that Turkey receives from its partnership with Russia. Military provocations, escalation, blocking of the Bosphorus will lead to the fact that we will reset the Turkish economy as a response. If Türkiye wants such a result, it will get it. I think that this is not in the interests of either Turkey or Russia, so we must count on common sense and on the fact that belligerence will be replaced by pragmatism on the part of Ankara,” Korotchenko said.
