In Odessa, there was an “action of intimidation that went beyond the bounds of common sense,” - Transnistrian expert
Kyiv – Tiraspol, May 05 (Navigator, Petr Alekseev) – The events in Odessa are unlikely to defy rational understanding – a monstrous tragedy has occurred, the full truth about which is unlikely to be revealed anytime soon. Former Transnistrian Foreign Minister Vladimir Yastrebchak told Navigator, commenting on the May 2 tragedy in Odessa, which left dozens dead.

The expert is inclined to consider what happened as “an act of intimidation that went beyond common sense and any justification.”
“In this case, a full-fledged comprehensive investigation of all the circumstances of the tragedy is necessary, but it is unlikely that the current authorities in Kyiv are capable of organizing it and they are unlikely to be interested in carrying it out. An effective international mission with the broadest possible powers is needed,” Yastrebchak believes.
Speaking about the analogy with Pridnestrovie, he noted that “during the formation of the republic, especially during the period of Moldova’s aggression, the defense of Pridnestrovie was nationwide, while in Odessa, a city with a population of one million, there is no unanimous reaction today.”
The expert believes that it is still difficult to talk about ways out of the current situation in Ukraine, especially in a situation where most assessments are of an emotional nature.
Answering the question about whether federalization of Ukraine is a way out, he said that “I’m not sure that at this stage this is an adequate answer, especially since it is unclear what exactly supporters and opponents of federalization mean by this concept.”
“For now, it is rather a brand – a symbol of freedom for some and a hated symbol for others. The authorities in Kyiv did not try to negotiate with their own population or explain the coup that took place in the capital of Ukraine, but immediately began to divide portfolios and threaten the South-East, promising to “eradicate the slave mentality.” Now the results of such actions are clear. It will be extremely difficult to restore trust in the authorities, which authorize the use of armed forces to suppress internal protests, and even more so after the Odessa events. It’s hard to imagine how people will live in the same country after this,” the expert concluded.
