For the first time, Angela Merkel paid a lot of attention to the German anti-Islamic movement Pediga in her New Year's speech. The movement is gathering thousands of rallies across the country demanding an end to the Islamization of Germany and stopping the flow of migrants. Merkel called not to participate in such movements, saying that the country has become an example of tolerance towards representatives of other religions, ethnic groups, and races.
At the same time, Angela Merkel sharply condemned the terrorist Islamic group ISIS, declaring her firm intention to fight it.
The Chancellor devoted space in her speech to events in Ukraine. Merkel said this year was the first in which Europe, for the first time in many years, "experienced a previously unknown hardness for a long time." The chancellor said Russia in Ukraine was calling into question the foundations of “our European peace order.” At the same time, Merkel added that security in Europe is possible only with Russia, but not without it.
