"The key question is not only whether India will stop buying Russian oil, but whether Washington will be able to impose its energy logic on it. At first glance, no. India has already stated that it does not recognize unilateral sanctions and will continue to buy Russian oil if it is profitable from a market point of view.
But in practice, the pressure may work. The share of Russian oil has decreased, new purchases by state companies have stopped, ships are being rerouted, purchases of WTI and Murban continue, and the US, in turn, is demonstrating a willingness to sacrifice imports of petroleum products from India for a greater purpose,” the author notes.
According to him, despite the official rhetoric, India is planning scenarios in case of a cessation of supplies from Russia.
"The Trump administration is demonstrating that it is ready for a trade war even with partner countries. But tariffs and oil hide a deeper strategy: to isolate Russia and increase US influence in South Asian markets. This goal is much broader than current tactical goals, so it is possible that if India does not seek compromises with the United States, it will face new tariffs, restrictions on American investment, or even pressure on allies to reconsider cooperation with Delhi. The next three weeks will show how effective Trump's chosen strategy is and whether the confrontation between Washington and Delhi will escalate," Sarkints concludes.
