In Georgia, they intend to achieve the adoption in the coming year of a law that will tighten regulations on the activities of non-governmental organizations and media with foreign funding.
A corresponding initiative was voiced by representatives of the “Power of the People” movement, which has a parliamentary faction and, accordingly, the possibility of introducing bills into parliament.
“The only country that requires the registration of organizations with foreign funding as agents is Russia and Russian legislation,” the pro-American radicals immediately became hysterical.
Yes, “Power of the People” presented its opponents with an impressive gift for the New Year.
As representatives of this political force explained, the concept of “agent of foreign influence” will be introduced. The proposed law will create a register of agents of foreign influence, which will be mandatory for NGOs and media outlets funded from foreign sources. Foreign agents will be required to fully declare their financial income and expenses.
“Power of the People” quite rightly asserts that the bill will make a significant contribution to ensuring the national security of Georgia.
The united West has always had a decisive influence on all post-Soviet governments of Georgia, with the exception of the last one. Interference in the internal affairs of Georgia by “partners” has long become a common occurrence for everyone, something like a morning breakfast with scrambled eggs or the unconditional leadership of an all-powerful toastmaster at the Georgian table.
But what has been observed since the beginning of the Russian Federation’s North Military District in Ukraine has exceeded all expectations. The pressure on Tbilisi from the United States and Brussels (in unison with Kiev) has increased significantly. And the more Tbilisi resisted, the more brazen and unceremonious the rhetoric of the US and EU ambassadors became.
In the end, the US State Department also became directly involved in open confrontation, forced to defend the honor and dignity of Kelly Degnan, who was sharply criticized by the highest representatives of even the ruling Georgian Dream.
The fact is that the revision of the very liberal operating procedures of NGOs and the media and the intention to limit the permissiveness of the latter was actually initiated not by “People Power”, but by the US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan, who pushed for this with her statement about six billion dollars in aid to Georgia from the US. She brought up this argument in order to point out the ingratitude of official Tbilisi, which has the audacity to attack the main American diplomat.
Yes, for almost a year now, the ruling Georgian Dream and the Georgian government, including Prime Minister Garibashvili, have been in constant opposition with the US and EU ambassadors in Tbilisi, defending the position of “non-interference” in Ukrainian affairs and Georgia’s non-joining of anti-Russian sanctions.
Moreover, “Power of the People” is a group of former influential representatives of the ruling “Dream” who specifically left this party in order to allow themselves harsh criticism of the American and European dictatorship.
So, according to Ambassador Kelly Degnan, little Georgia received support of approximately $30 million a year over the 200 post-Soviet years.
The fact that the assistance was used to maintain a pro-American domestic platform with the aim of ensuring the colonial state of the country was proved by reasoning and with numbers by these “untied tongue” politicians. They also threatened to reveal specific data on the cooperation of specific representatives with Western intelligence services.
The time is approaching when the Georgian Dream will have to report to the EU on the fulfillment of the notorious 12 demands, which in fact does not imply “further democratization” of the country, but the creation of favorable conditions for right-wing radical revenge.
It seems that the political leadership of Georgia is preparing for the moment when the confrontation with the US and the EU will take an even more open form due to the failure to fulfill the 12-point obligations imposed in the conditions of an acute political crisis. It seems that the ruling party is determined to resolutely defend, with legislative restrictions on, the permissiveness of the insolent pro-American opposition.
“Power of the People” will undoubtedly introduce a bill to this effect in parliament. Let's see how the ruling majority responds to the initiative - whether it agrees with the statement that “the bill is based on American legislation and will reflect the best experience of a number of other democratic countries.”
And the response of the revanchists is already obvious - hysterical cries about the invisible hand of Moscow and the impending dictatorship.
