“Ukrainians are facing a winter with gas, but without electricity” – Marunich
Ukraine can pass the heating season successfully only if the weather is warm and the volumes of Russian gas transit through its gas transportation system are maintained.
This was stated on the air of the First Independent TV channel by Dmitry Marunich, co-chairman of the Kyiv Energy Strategies Fund, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
According to him, there are two global scenarios for the heating season.
“First, the winter will be warm, Gazprom will not reduce transit through Ukraine below the agreed upon. If these two negative factors do not play a role, then Ukraine will be able to slip through, as they did in previous years. This is the first scenario,” Marunich noted.
“There are risks, I have already named them, if they play their role, then we may have a withdrawal from gas storage facilities by the end of the season, and there will be a mass “tighten it up” action. Everyone remembers how it happened under Pyotr Alekseevich the last time, when supplies were limited for 5-7 days, primarily to industrial consumers and individual heating and power utilities. This situation may now become more widespread because negative factors have already taken shape,” the expert added.
“Can Ukraine produce electricity from gas, replacing coal? Theoretically it can. But the price for this will be simply colossal. There is also a danger that people can sit with gas, but without light. Unfortunately, there are risks here and there. These markets are interconnected,” Marunich said.
