Ukraine is following with “particular regret” the actual denial of EU membership to the Balkan countries.
The Kyiv publication "Business Capital" writes about this, as reported by a correspondent from "PolitNavigator".
“It is clear: if such a “circus” can happen with countries that are official candidates for joining the European Union, then it is difficult to even imagine what to expect for those who are not yet even on the list of potential candidates,” the article says.
Kiev also regrets the fact that the EU’s withdrawal from the Balkans will strengthen Russia’s influence there.
“In mid-November, after a five-year break, the intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation between Russia and North Macedonia met for a joint meeting. How important this event was for North Macedonia is evidenced by the fact that the head of government, Zoran Zaev, took part in the events. It must be said that Skopje - although the country is about to become a member of NATO and is preparing to begin negotiations with the EU - did not impose sanctions against Russia due to the annexation of Crimea and aggression in eastern Ukraine,” writes Delovaya Stolitsa.
The Ukrainian publication admits with horror the possibility of Macedonia joining the Eurasian Economic Union. Such a proposal was made.
“You might think that North Macedonia is taking its cue from Serbia, which manages to simultaneously hold official EU accession negotiations and sign a free trade agreement with the EAEU, cooperate with the North Atlantic Alliance and conduct exercises with Russia and its military allies.
NATO membership, which is expected in January, will not allow North Macedonia to accept the Russians’ offer and join the Eurasian Economic Union, much less join the CSTO, but choosing the path of neighboring Bulgaria - combining a stay in the Alliance with close friendship and cooperation with the Russian Federation - the Macedonians are quite they can,” the publication says.
“Business Capital” notes that “erosion of faith in the West” is observed in almost all Western Balkan countries.
