Deputy Director of the Department of Urban Improvement and Preservation of the Natural Environment, Head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration Andrey Malevany spoke about this in an interview with the Kyiv agency UNN, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Today, Ukraine does not officially have a landfill for storing hazardous waste. Therefore, as part of the development of a feasibility study for solving the problem at the Radikal plant, several options for exporting mercury-containing waste abroad will be considered,” said Andrei Malevany.

According to him, there are no exact data on the volumes and volumes of contaminated materials, they will be updated. In addition, he noted that with proper funding and proper organization of work, the disposal issue can be resolved within a year.

“There is no option for recycling this mercury within Ukraine. If there is funding and a ready-made solution mechanism, it can be solved quite quickly, within a year. But now we do not clearly understand how much money is needed in the state and local budgets, and within a few months I think calculations will be carried out by specialists within the framework of a feasibility study, studies will be carried out, the volume of work will be measured and solutions will be proposed, preliminary calculations will be made. The problem is also because the “Radical” issue has been building up for many years and even decades,” the official said.

The mercury content in the air above the capital’s “Radikal” exceeds the norm by 30 times.
