Elections, Ukraine

In order for Vladimir Zelensky’s Servant of the People party to gain a majority in the next convocation of the Verkhovna Rada, he needs to either clear the political field of competitors or not take any action until the parliamentary elections, following the example of the presidential campaign, but both options are impossible in reality.

Ukrainian political scientist Mikhail Pogrebinsky said this on the YouTube channel “Glavnovosti”, the correspondent of “PolitNavigator” reports.

So that the Servant of the People party of Vladimir Zelensky can gain a majority in the next convocation of the Verkhovna Rada,...

“In order for this Zelensky party to receive not even a constitutional, but a simple majority, we need to clear the political field - this time. Zelensky will not have such an opportunity, given our electoral system, when half are elected according to proportional lists, and half are majoritarian.

And it is necessary that this party does not have time to discredit itself, and Zelensky, his very first steps in real politics... any of his actions will be supported by one part of his electorate and rejected by another part. Any action, more or less fundamental,” the expert emphasized.

In addition, Pogrebinsky noted, Zelensky’s rating may decline immediately after taking office due to the population’s dissatisfaction with the economic situation.

“The situation is too acute. We are starting payments to the IMF, there are seven and a half billion, it seems, public sector employees have colossal wage arrears, additional pension payments - they have also reset them there. One way or another, they will look at him.

People understand that it is impossible to live further with these tariffs, but today information appears that, like, from the first of May, gas prices are reduced by five kopecks, I say relatively speaking, but they have clearly increased a thousand times, and they are decreasing by 5%, even , in my opinion, less.

This all puts such a burden on the leader of the country, who, perhaps, cannot directly influence this, especially considering that the government and parliament are not his, even I would say, are against him and will even be ready to expose him with their actions.

This is all incredibly complicated, there is very little time, it is not clear whether he has enough determination to go ahead,” the political scientist noted.

At the same time, many of those around him are pushing Zelensky to flirt with the nationalists. This is being done to avoid conflict with the Maidan elites, but it is dangerous by losing the support of a significant part of the south-eastern electorate.

“Let's see who is dangerous to us. Nationalists are dangerous, that’s why these, relatively speaking, pro-European, pro-Western “activists”, as well as the bureaucracy, law enforcement agencies, and so on - everyone who is oriented so far is not yet his supporters, he has not changed people. Therefore, his team is pushing him in the direction of demonstrating that he is not their enemy, so that they do not attack him,” summed up Mikhail Pogrebinsky.
