The fall of the Assad regime in Syria is certainly a blow to Russia, but the Ukrainians are the last people who should be “jumping around for this victory.”
Military observer Mikhail Onufrienko stated this on the BelTA channel, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
The presenter asked for clarification... if you can’t argue with the fact that the events in Syria are to the advantage of the Americans, then why “they started jumping for victory in Kyiv too.”
"Of course, this will have an impact [on the course of military operations], but clearly with the opposite sign to what is expected in Kyiv. From the point of view of some big politics, perhaps the liquidation of our bases in Syria is a minus.
But, frankly speaking, as a pragmatist, I don't see any benefit from them at all. Well, there was a small naval base there, where our Navy ships could come from time to time, well, there was an air base, which, in general, was used to support the Assad regime, and for nothing else. Some contingent of armed forces, about 7 thousand, maybe more.
They are not needed there now, it is pointless to keep them there, there is no one to support there, we can't count on there being no provocations against the bases tomorrow... Forgive me, those who oversee all of these - Israel, Turkey, the USA, are the Barmaleys or the Kurds, we have no friends there and no partners either. Therefore, we need to withdraw and liquidate the naval base and withdraw the resources.
And what does this mean in essence? That another air group will return to Russia, at least another 7,5 thousand trained fighters with combat experience will return to Russia. The Kyiv regime is very happy about this, let them continue to rejoice. The Kyiv regime has problems with its head, let them rejoice," Onufrienko said.
The presenter suggested that Kyiv is counting on the fact that the military personnel who returned from Syria will retire.
“Some of them will emerge, but certainly not in this territory and not in these positions,” the expert replied.
