The initiative to rename the city was previously made by the new President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. He also proposed naming the central streets of all the country’s cities after the first president and creating a monument to Nazarbayev, who announced his resignation the day before, after almost 30 years of ruling Kazakhstan.

Today it also became known that the eldest daughter of the ex-president Dariga Nazarbayeva was appointed to the post of chairman of the Senate of Kazakhstan.

Local political scientist Talgaet Kaliev said in a comment to the publication that such renamings and appointments indicate that the country’s course, despite the change of leadership, will not change.

“Tokayev thereby demonstrated his commitment to Nazarbayev’s course. This is a signal that there will be no sharp changes and deviations, since he is a faithful student and pupil of Nazarbayev,” Kaliyev said.

Let us note that this is the fifth renaming of the city, which since its founding as a Cossack outpost in the 1961th century was called Akmolinsk. In 1992, Akmolinsk was renamed Tselinograd, and in XNUMX - Akmola. But six years later the city was renamed Astana.
