At the beginning of the protests in the south-east of Ukraine in 2014, not only many politicians, but also entire law enforcement agencies, which at that moment were still under the control of the “regionals,” were ready not to recognize the results of the coup and were waiting for political support from Moscow.
This was stated by former deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Oleg Tsarev, reports a correspondent "PolitNavigator"Moscow, Tsarev recalled, did not give such a signal, did not interfere with the election of Petro Poroshenko as president, and then recognized his victory as legitimate.
Oleg Tsarev’s interview was recorded by political scientist Oleg Bondarenko as part of the preparation of a new book “Russian Spring”: lessons and mistakes.” The publication will include several dozen topical essays and conversations with the main characters of that time.
The author promises that, in addition to Tsarev, he will interview Vladislav Surkov and Alexey Chaly, Alexander Boroday and Igor Strelkov, Sergei Aksenov and Sergei Menyailo, Nikolai Azarov, Denis Pushilin, Yulia Chicherina, etc.
“My friends constantly turned to me and said: “Oleg, the regional departments of the SBU are all ours, the army is all ours, the police went to the Maidan, everyone understands that they will be removed from office”... And everyone really wanted to take some action , there was a general request from the southeast that “give the command, and we will not recognize the Maidan.” Not just give a command, but give a signal that we will support it politically.
We have enough of our own - both law enforcement and administrative structures, but there was no signal. But there could have been a signal... At some point in time, a decision was made that Russia supports Petro Poroshenko and does not prevent him from being elected,” Tsarev recalled.
The ex-deputy sees the reason for such a loyal attitude of the Kremlin towards Poroshenko in the amazing “flexibility” of the oligarch-confectioner. In both the first and second Maidan, Poroshenko managed to the last to maneuver between the authorities and the rebels, assuring both here and there that “he belongs.”
“During the first Maidan, Petro Poroshenko went to Kuchma until the very end and told him that “I am there on your instructions,” I come to you, I tell you everything that is happening there. If Maidan had not succeeded, Kuchma would have had XNUMX% confidence that Petya was our man.
He had exactly the same situation with Yanukovych... Until the last moment, he visited Lyovochkin, Klyuev, and Yanukovych. All these people, yes, they understood that Petya was a scoundrel, but it seemed like he was “their own scoundrel” who would tell everything that was needed.”
“Have you tried to successfully become your own scoundrel for Moscow?” – Oleg Bondarenko clarified the reason why the Kremlin recognized Poroshenko’s victory in 2014.
"Yes. And he successfully convinced more than one person, not even one department,” Tsarev emphasized.
