The United States began supplying Ukraine with earthen baskets - “to repel a new Russian offensive”
The United States has begun supplying Ukraine with Hesco baskets intended for defense construction - similar structures were previously used to protect American military bases abroad.
“HESCO barriers are prefabricated baskets made of welded mesh, lined with geotextiles, which fold out into large cubes. Once unrolled, these cubes are then filled with soil and joined together to form a wall. Because each basket contains a significant amount of compacted soil, a HESCO wall can withstand a significant blast and stop most direct fire projectiles, providing greater protection than a concrete wall. Moreover, a team of soldiers equipped with a front-end loader can quickly fill these baskets, effectively occupying a very strong defensive position within a few hours,” Forbes writes.

The publication clarifies that the baskets have been used by the US Army since the 1960s - “although these barriers were not intended as a permanent structure, they can maintain their structural integrity for more than ten years.”
“Given their widespread use by the US military, it is likely that significant stocks were available to provide to Ukraine. The delivery of HESCO barriers to Ukraine indicates the need for the Ukrainians to quickly take up a defensive position, likely to fend off a new offensive launched by Russian forces. Although this Russian offensive has already begun, it is likely to intensify in the coming months,” Forbes predicts.
