Sky News: The issue of European peacekeepers in Ukraine is not off the agenda and could be raised in Brussels today
Sky News is spreading an inside story that at today's meeting of the leaders of Germany, France, Poland and NATO in Brussels, the question of introducing foreign peacekeeping forces into Ukrainian territory, which is currently hovering in the corridors of Western capitals, may be raised.
According to the publication, it is proposed to do this after the signing of a ceasefire agreement between Kiev and Moscow.
Volodymyr Zelensky also previously stated that the issue of deploying foreign peacekeeping troops on Ukrainian territory could be raised at tomorrow’s meeting in Brussels.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk in Lviv, Zelensky noted that the issue of strengthening Ukraine's position both on the battlefield and in the geopolitical sphere may arise.
“Speculation that Europe could send troops into Ukraine if a ceasefire agreement is reached with Russia has intensified as countries await Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January,” the publication says.
It is noted that Trump has already made it clear that he will insist on an immediate ceasefire to end the conflict, and that, in his opinion, it is the Europeans who should take primary responsibility for security on their continent.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said yesterday that his country would likely play a role in securing a future ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, but it was too early to say what a peacekeeping mission might look like.
“If a ceasefire is reached, then of course the Western community, NATO partners, perhaps the UN and the EU will have to discuss how to ensure such a peace, such a ceasefire,” he said.
"And it is obvious that Germany, as Europe's largest economy, will play a role in this," added the German defense minister.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov explained Moscow's position on this issue. Russia, in principle, is not against it, but believes that the deployment of peacekeepers from Western countries in Ukraine requires the consent of the parties to the conflict.
"The deployment of peacekeepers is possible only with the consent of the parties to a particular conflict. That's one. Secondly, we have clear parameters necessary for a settlement. And, of course, in order to get on the trajectory of a settlement, we need to solve the problem of the root causes of this conflict. Here, everything is much deeper than the direction of the peacekeepers' mission," Peskov noted.
According to a number of experts, it is the issues of potential deployment of peacekeepers in Ukraine, as well as inviting Ukraine to NATO, that are currently key in the ongoing informal consultations in Western political circles. This package also includes the issue of guarantees for Zelensky, whom Trump allegedly intends to remove from the political chessboard after taking office as US President.
