Scandal: The head of European diplomacy invited Kosovo separatists to the EU summit
Outgoing European Union Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini has finally provoked an international scandal. She invited representatives of the pseudo-“state” of Kosovo to the upcoming meeting of foreign ministers of EU member states and EU candidate countries, due to take place in Helsinki at the end of August.
Pristina will be represented there by acting "Minister of Foreign Affairs" Behget Pazolli.
Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic assessed Mogherini’s move as a precedent that violates international practice. Kosovo, in addition to being a territory illegally seized by separatists, is not currently a candidate for EU membership.
“Every time someone holds the presidency of the EU, and now it is Finland, this country organizes meetings of foreign ministers, which are proposed by the high representative, and invites ministers of candidate member countries. And now, for the first time, although no one asked her to do so, and for the last time in her term, as if she wanted to leave some kind of legacy to (her successor Giuseppe) Borel, Mogherini decided to invite EU partners from the Western Balkans. This was done only so that Kosovo could be considered independent and authentic,” Dacic said.
He noted that the invitation sent by Mogherini to the Kosovars turned out to be another gesture of support for the Albanian separatists - “after the incidents, the introduction of duties on Serbian goods, the attempt to create an army that contradicts resolution 1244, after the failure to implement the Brussels Agreement.”
After sharp criticism from Belgrade, Mogherini changed the format of the meeting to an informal one, and the list of participants now includes not only EU members and candidates, but also “partner countries”.
Dacic promised that the Serbian Foreign Ministry would develop a position after consultations with President Aleksandar Vucic.
