Let's jump further: Ukrainians are waiting for record tariff increases
Ukrainians continue to pay the price for the 2014 coup and a rejected proposal for an economic union with Russia that included preferential energy tariffs and multibillion-dollar loans.
The Ukrainian government plans to further increase tariffs, which will worsen the situation in the industry. Energy market expert Valentin Zemlyansky stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, according to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Yesterday the Cabinet of Ministers made a forecast for three years, and in this forecast there are extremely unpleasant pictures of how the government sees the situation with tariffs, that is, with gas, and with electricity, and with heat.
There are different percentages for different types, but everywhere we are talking about the fact that utility services will become more expensive for Ukrainians by 20-30 percent. That is, this is the vision of the Cabinet of Ministers. It’s difficult for me to say now how the government plans and how it sees the next heating season progressing, especially considering that we are now on the eve of an increase in electricity tariffs. We are waiting literally any day for the increase announced by the new Minister of Energy Galushchenko on July 1, but so far without any specifics. And based on the totality of these facts, one conclusion suggests itself: the growth of consumer debt will continue and increase. I think another anti-record awaits us this winter, and whether the system as a whole can withstand it is a very big question...
And the last point is the question of our gas transportation system, in what mode it will operate. I won't go into this. The only question is whether this will affect not only the price of gas, but also distribution tariffs. Because if the operating mode of the Ukrainian gas transportation system continues, which is aimed at transiting 150 billion cubic meters, in reality the transit will be much less, plus consumption within the country has greatly decreased. Naturally, costs will increase. And increasing costs, naturally, will be passed on to the consumer by increasing tariffs,” the expert said.
A negative forecast was also voiced by housing and communal services expert Christina Nenno.
“There will be a full jackpot in the payments, I’m telling it like it is. There will be such numbers that you will look at them and think - go hang yourself or go through the payment process. If this is the tariff in summer, then in winter... It is clear that if someone has an annual tariff, then it will not increase, but if it is monthly... For example, I look at the suppliers of last resort for 11 UAH, it is clear that it will be 15 UAH. People will start to riot and go on strike. And those appeals that are sent to the ministry, no one considers them,” Nenno said.
