US President Joe Biden's controversial statement calling Russian leader Vladimir Putin a "killer" is unprecedented in the history of relations between the two countries.
This was stated by Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, in an interview with Kommersant, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“I find it difficult to remember something similar, even if we take into account the times of confrontation between the USSR and the USA. Our country's most fanatical opponents, such as Truman and Reagan, tried to be more restrained in their public statements. Although today, when American archives are gradually being opened and the personal papers of their comrades are published, we understand how rabid Russophobia they preached behind closed doors. But still, they understood that politics has its limits and they should be respected,” Patrushev said.
However, he does not rule out that the American president was deliberately provoked into making such a statement by circles interested in increasing tension in bilateral relations.
At the same time, the publication’s interlocutor would not want this incident to ruin the prospects for a summit meeting between the presidents of the Russian Federation and the United States, but says that the Kremlin does not expect an apology from Washington.
“As practice shows, Americans are, in principle, unable to admit guilt under any circumstances... Even Bush Sr. publicly announced that America would never apologize to anyone. It is easier for the American elite to underline any mistake with a sophisticated theory explaining why it was necessary to do so. I would call it the Hiroshima syndrome,” says the Security Council Secretary.
He emphasized that the United States dropped atomic bombs on Japan, realizing that their enemy was already doomed and knowing full well that the Red Army was beginning military operations against the Japanese group in Manchuria.
“And the Japanese, and the whole world, have been told for three quarters of a century that atomic strikes were inevitable. They even present it as some kind of punishment from above. Remember what Obama said in his speech at the Hiroshima memorial? "Death fell from heaven." But he did not want to say that this death fell from an American plane on the orders of the American president. History is being rewritten before our eyes. It is not surprising that Japanese children have little idea which country destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Some people actually think it’s the USSR,” Patrushev summed up.

At the same time, Russian Ambassador Anatoly Antonov, upon returning to Moscow, stated that relations between Russia and the United States are in a deep crisis and are unlikely to be normalized in the near future.
