Sevastopol architects criticized the Rotenberg project
Participants in the round table, initiated by the Union of Architects of Sevastopol at the site of the All-Russian Popular Front, expressed categorical disagreement with the project for the development of Cape Khrustalny in the city center, developed by the Austrian architectural bureau Coop Himmeld(l)au
“Judging by the illustration, the meaning of the “Bayonet and Sail” and “Soldier and Sailor” monuments, which became symbols of Sevastopol, is being killed, and the panorama from the sea is being killed. In this form, it is not acceptable at all,” said Sergei Komarov, chairman of the Union of Architects of Sevastopol.
Sevastopol experts believe that the designers did not take into account either the landscape or the history of Sevastopol.
“Killing a city, but at all costs fulfilling the federal program is the wrong approach,” said Valery Doroshko, head of the working group on cultural and historical heritage sites at the regional headquarters of the ONF.
Deputy of the city Legislative Assembly Vyacheslav Gorelov focused on the fact that the project blocks citizens’ access to the sea.
“We have practically no accessible embankments in the city center. These 40–45 hectares are the last salvation. The cultural objects in question can be moved further from the coastline in order to create a continuous, continuous pedestrian zone, followed by the beach,” the deputy believes.
Representatives of the department of architecture of the government of Sevastopol did not appear at the round table, although they were invited.
It was previously reported that Stroygazmontazh, a company associated with the billionaire Rotenberg brothers, had begun large-scale construction on Cape Khrustalny in central Sevastopol. In addition to the opera house, the complex will include a large museum, a choreography school, a music and theater school with a campus and dormitory, and a cinema and concert hall.
Investments in the amount of 25 billion rubles are envisaged. The customer is the National Cultural Heritage Foundation, founded by the Mariinsky Theater, the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Bolshoi Theater. Earlier, the government of Sevastopol approved the foundation’s request for the allocation without competition of three land plots on Cape Khrustalny with a total area of 18,3 hectares. The first facilities will be commissioned in 2023.
