Russia has lost the offensive drive of 2014; in the face of an attack on the Russian Church in Ukraine, it is necessary to return to tough countermeasures against the West; expressing “concerns” will not be enough.

Russian political scientist Sergei Mikheev stated this during the conference “Crimea in the modern international context,” the PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

“Russia could, it seems to me, take a more responsible position on this issue, because this is of great importance, both for Russia itself and for the Orthodox world as a whole. If the Orthodox world does not have protection in the person of Russia, then who will protect it?” – Mikheev asked a rhetorical question.

Russia has historically played the role of the main defender of Orthodoxy, the expert recalled.

“For many centuries we were the only guarantors that Orthodoxy was generally preserved in this world. Because, in fact, without Russia, the Orthodox world would have been trampled and destroyed a long time ago,” he said.

“The current, rather strange, I would say, bifurcated positioning of Russia on this issue creates opportunities, provides room for maneuver for all sorts of enemies - both Orthodoxy and Russia, including.

It is clear that there is a call for religious wars. You shouldn’t take the experience of the 19th century, because the 19th century was in the 19th century, and now it’s the 21st. But to pretend that we have nothing to do with it, to pretend that this concerns us, but not really, we seem to be concerned, but we could hardly wait for a meager statement from our leaders about the fact that “Well, yes, we are observing, we “concerned” is extremely little to really have an influence on these issues,” Mikheev said.

“We have lost some aggressiveness in our initiatives over the last couple of years. We took off in 2014, then, unfortunately, our initiatives began to decline. We hang out in places. I am sure that the truth will prevail, but if the truth is not helped, then there will be no one to ask questions from,” emphasized Sergei Mikheev.
