Saakashvili wants to officially become a political refugee in Ukraine - lawyer

The ex-president of Georgia, former chairman of the Odessa regional state administration Mikheil Saakashvili filed a petition to be granted the status of a person in need of additional protection in Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

Saakashvili’s lawyer Markiyan Galabala announced this in a comment to the Kyiv edition of RBC-Ukraine.

“He is asking for status as a person in need of additional protection. The application was submitted to the State Migration Service in the Lviv region on September 11. Political asylum is a common name for this status,” the lawyer said.

Let us recall that earlier the Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yuriy Lutsenko said that there are circumstances that prevent the extradition of Saakashvili to Georgia.

“Mr. Saakashvili, after illegally crossing the Ukrainian border, submitted documents to the migration service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which, in accordance with our international obligations, prevent his extradition,” Lutsenko said.

Let us note that Saakashvili crossed the Ukrainian border from Poland on September 10. The Mostysky District Court of the Lviv Region fined him 3,4 thousand hryvnia for illegally crossing the border.
