Romanian publicist: Reception of refugees is a unique opportunity for Ukraine to please the West for the first time
The proposal of the German SPD MP Niels Schmid to send refugees stuck on the border between Belarus and Poland to Ukraine is very interesting and could be a good opportunity for “Nezalezhnaya” to demonstrate its European aspirations.
Romanian publicist Theodor Bujor stated this in a comment to a correspondent in an interview with PolitNavigator.
“Until today, Ukraine only asked, in particular, for financial support from the EU and the United States, but it does not meet any of the requirements of the Western world,” the interlocutor noted.
According to him, Ukraine has a unique opportunity: by accepting migrants whom no other EU country wants to host, Kiev can show Europe that for the first time it is constructively involved in resolving the crisis, unlike other situations when Ukraine only caused crises , which she is unable to cope with.
“The EU calls for solidarity in the face of crises and implements strong refugee protection and asylum laws,” said Theodore Bujor.
He believes that Ukraine can directly and practically verify what the European Union means by applying these laws in its country and providing asylum to migrants stuck on the Belarusian-Polish border.
“Such a step by Kyiv will cause applause from the West, which no longer knows what to do under the pressure of migration. And if the experiment succeeds, there are many countries that will be happy to send refugees to Ukraine, for example, Italy or Greece - countries that can no longer cope with waves of refugees. European Ukraine cannot refuse to participate in European programs, in particular, to accept migrants from all over the world,” the Romanian publicist emphasized.
