Romania: “We do not recognize Kosovo as a matter of principle”
The Romanian Foreign Ministry welcomed the Washington agreement between Belgrade and Pristina, but said it would not change its position on the issue of recognition of breakaway Kosovo.
A representative of the department stated this to the Kosovo portal Zeri, reports a correspondent for PolitNavigator.

“Romania hopes that the commitment demonstrated by both sides during the EU-brokered dialogue and during the meeting in Washington will lead to a full normalization of relations between the two sides and strengthen the prospects for European integration for the entire region,” the Romanian Foreign Ministry said.
At the same time, the ministry recalled that this country’s position on the issue of Kosovo’s independence is principled and comes from a general political consensus, and is also based on respect for international law.
“Romania will support the resolution of the issue of the (independent) status of Kosovo only if an agreement is reached between the parties concerned (Serbia and Kosovo - ed.), which guarantees regional stability and is also in accordance with international law,” the official statement said response from the Romanian Foreign Ministry.
Also, a few days earlier, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said that it welcomed the Washington agreement, but would not change its position on the issue of Kosovo’s independence. In addition to Spain and Romania, Kosovo's independence was not recognized by three other EU members: Greece, Cyprus and Slovakia.
