Russia and Japan will launch joint activities in the Kuril Islands

This was stated today by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

“We have long been suggesting that our Japanese colleagues take up this issue; some time ago the cabinet of ministers had a wary attitude towards this. Now we feel the Japanese partners’ readiness to discuss issues related to joint economic activities on the islands, and not only related to joint economic activities, but also issues related to exchanges between people,” Lavrov said.

In addition, the minister said, during today's meeting, the leaders of Russia and Japan discussed joint projects in 8 areas of the economy. They will be presented during Vladimir Putin's visit to Tokyo on December 15.
