Humanity is not in danger of extinction from the current coronavirus epidemic.

This was stated by Professor Vladimir Nikiforov, head of the infectious diseases department at Pirogov Medical University, in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, as reported by a PolitNavigator correspondent.

He says there is no point in making predictions yet about how long the epidemic will last.

“Many factors influence the process, and it is impossible to say that we will reach the peak by the end of February or by the summer, or that everything will last another year or two. The only thing I can say is that humanity will clearly not die, and there is nothing catastrophic in this pandemic. The question is what losses we will face and how adequately we will respond to the situation. During a period of mass hysteria, inadequate measures begin,” the doctor said.

He considered the return to quarantine to be an inadequate measure.

“I consider this measure useless today. It will not only cause a lot of side effects, but will also further destroy the economy. Even if we completely interrupt all contacts (which is impossible), the spread of infection will still continue at least during the incubation period. Until we all get sick or get vaccinated, this will not end,” the professor believes.

He also commented on the assertions that “herd immunity is a myth, repeated infections have already been recognized as a reality...”

"This is not true. Herd immunity probably exists, and recurrent illnesses are extremely rare. Today there are already millions of people who have recovered from the disease, among whom there are tens of thousands of repeat cases. This doesn’t make any difference,” Nikiforov summed up.
