Russian fighters and military transporters can land in Berdyansk, – deputy

Kyiv, February 27 (PolitNavigator, Alexandra Ignatieva) – Verkhovna Rada deputy from the “Petro Poroshenko Bloc” Irina Friz opposed the lease of Berdyansk Airport to Rinat Akhmetov’s company.

“Concerning the intentions of the Metnvest company to lease a former military airfield in Berdyansk. Considering the military-political situation, the ATO, external aggression, and also taking into account the strategic location of the facility, I consider it necessary to urgently stop any schemes for leasing the airfield to a commercial structure,” Frieze wrote on her Facebook page.

According to her, the airfield in Berdyansk, according to its parameters, allows it to receive military transport aircraft, as well as fighters of all types in service with the Russian Armed Forces.

“Despite Russia’s active use of the airbase in Taganrog, the airfield in Berdyansk is the optimal base for the relocation of troops and logistics supplies in the event of enemy troops advancing from Mariupol towards Crimea. The airfield has the ability to receive up to 10 aircraft per hour, which is equal to 2000 fighters with full equipment in the viaduct using IL-76. In 2010, a similar operation was observed to lease out the airport in Sevastopol to structures close to the same company. In 2014, the Sevastopol airfield was actively used to receive military transport aircraft with Russian troops,” Friz said.

The deputy intends to initiate at the next meeting of the relevant committee on national security and defense issues the issue of the situation around the Berdyansk airfield. In her opinion, it is necessary to prohibit the lease of military infrastructure of strategic importance.

As PolitNavigator reported, Metinvest expressed interest in leasing the Berdyansk airport, citing the need to attract specialists, including from Europe.
