Putin congratulated the people of Ukraine on Victory Day, ignoring Poroshenko
Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated the peoples of Ukraine and Georgia on the 74th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, without personally mentioning the leaders of these states.
The Russian president's corresponding statement was published on his official website, reports a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Our duty is to defend the truth about the fateful events of common history, to counter any attempts to incite ethnic hatred and revive fascist ideology. I am convinced that the people of Russia and Ukraine should sacredly cherish and remember the traditions of fraternal friendship and mutual assistance bequeathed by our fathers and grandfathers, which helped us together achieve a glorious Victory.
I wish the veterans of the Great Patriotic War good health, good spirits and longevity, and all citizens of Ukraine peace and prosperity,” Vladimir Putin said in his address to veterans and the people of Ukraine.
The situation with ignoring the President of Ukraine was also commented on by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov.
“Putin did not congratulate Poroshenko in previous years, but he always said that relations between the country’s leadership should in no way be projected onto the long-standing family and brotherly relations of the two countries, which is why he congratulates the people and veterans of Ukraine,” he noted.
The Russian leader also sent congratulatory messages to the heads of states such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
